On December 31, 2024, Puerto Rico experienced an islandwide power outage, leaving more than 1.2 million customers, or 83% of the island, without electricity on New Year’s Eve. Luma Energy, the consortium managing the grid, stated that the outage began at 5:30 a.m. and was under investigation.
Preliminary findings suggested a fault with an underground line as the cause of the widespread disruption. Luma Energy indicated that a full restoration of power could take between 24 to 48 hours.
This event highlights the ongoing challenges and fragility of Puerto Rico's energy infrastructure. For New Fortress Energy, which has significant investments and operations in Puerto Rico aimed at providing reliable energy, such outages underscore the critical need for robust and resilient power solutions on the island.
