National Grid plc announced a partnership with AI‑startup Rhizome to roll out the gridFIRM platform across its transmission and distribution networks in Massachusetts, New York, and the United Kingdom. The collaboration will use machine‑learning models to map wildfire exposure, quantify long‑term asset risk, and prioritize preventive actions such as vegetation management, line hardening, and selective line burial.
Wildfire activity in the Northeast has surged, with 2,626 fires reported in 2024—more than double the 2023 total. The gridFIRM platform will analyze historical fire data, weather patterns, and asset conditions to identify the most vulnerable segments of National Grid’s network and recommend targeted mitigation measures that can reduce outage costs and protect millions of customers.
Rhizome launched gridFIRM in July 2024, integrating AI and machine‑learning models with exposure analysis, extreme‑weather impact assessments, and wildfire risk modeling. By quantifying risk and prioritizing actions, the platform enables National Grid to shift from reactive repairs to proactive resilience investments, improving reliability while containing capital expenditures.
National Grid has already invested $150 million in AI technologies and, through its venture arm National Grid Partners, committed an additional $100 million to AI startups and platforms. The new partnership builds on that commitment, positioning the company to accelerate AI adoption across its grid operations and meet evolving regulatory expectations for wildfire risk management.
"This partnership aligns perfectly with National Grid’s strategic approach to risk management, system resilience, and bill affordability," said Casey Kirkpatrick, Director of Strategic Engineering. "By leveraging Rhizome’s advanced analytics, we can protect our customers and ensure the long‑term performance of our assets." Mishal Thadani, co‑founder and CEO of Rhizome, added, "Wildfire risk is no longer a regional problem. Our platform helps utilities worldwide identify and mitigate climate‑related threats, and we’re excited to work with National Grid to safeguard communities across the U.S. and U.K."
