NiSource has awarded the engineering, procurement, and construction contract for a 2,600‑MW combined‑cycle generation project near Wheatfield, Indiana. The project will consist of two nominal 1,300‑MW gas‑fired combined‑cycle units in a 2×2×1 configuration.
The contract will be executed by a joint venture between Zachry Group and Quanta Services. Zachry will lead engineering, procurement, project management, construction planning, and commissioning, drawing on its five‑decade experience building over 100 gas‑fired facilities totaling more than 60,000 MW. Quanta will provide field‑level leadership and craft‑skill workforce management, leveraging its experience in power‑generation construction and having built over 80,000 MW of generation assets.
The project is part of NiSource’s $28 billion capital plan over five years, which includes $7 billion earmarked for data‑center investments. NiSource’s CEO Lloyd Yates said the new plant will support the company’s strategy to expand generation capacity, meet growing data‑center demand, and maintain customer affordability.
Construction is expected to begin in 2026 after regulatory approvals, with full commercial operation anticipated by 2032. The plant will complement NiSource’s portfolio of renewable and low‑emission assets and help the company retire older coal units.
NiSource’s Q3 2025 results showed a slight decline in non‑GAAP adjusted net income compared to the prior year, with adjusted EPS of $0.19 versus $0.20 in Q3 2024. The company cited increased capital expenditures and investment in data‑center infrastructure as the primary drivers of the change.
