Nokia, in partnership with German national railway firm Deutsche Bahn, deployed the world’s first commercial 1900 MHz (n101) 5G radio network solution with a 5G Standalone (SA) core on live outdoor test tracks. This was announced on September 15, 2025.
This development enables the shift from the current Global System for Mobile Communications for Railway (GSM-R) to the 5G-based Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS standard). Nokia’s commercial 5G solution fully meets railways’ mission-critical needs and forthcoming FRMCS specifications.
The solution accelerates the digitalization of rail operations, increases capacity, and enhances passenger experience, ensuring railways remain interoperable, efficient, and future-ready. This initiative positions Nokia as a leader in providing advanced communication infrastructure for the railway industry.
