Nucor Corporation announced that its Science-Based Emissions Targets (SBET) have been certified by the Global Steel Climate Council (GSCC), of which Nucor is a Founding Member Company. The certified SBET sets an ambitious goal for Nucor to reduce emissions from its hot rolled steel production, encompassing Scopes 1, 2, and 3 emissions, by 2030.
Using a 2023 base year, Nucor's interim SBET aims for 0.975 metric tons of CO2e per metric ton of hot-rolled steel produced by 2030. Additionally, Nucor has a net-zero by 2050 target of 0.116 metric tons of CO2e per metric ton of hot-rolled steel, making it the first diversified U.S. steelmaker to include all three scopes in its GHG emission reduction targets.
These targets align with the GSCC Steel Climate Standard and Nucor's long-term goal surpasses the Standard's 2050 objective. The company plans to achieve these reductions through increased use of clean electricity, carbon capture and sequestration, near-zero GHG iron making, and by reducing consumption of injection and charge carbon and natural gas in its production processes.
