Nextracker and the University of California Berkeley Engineering announced a strategic partnership to establish the CALNEXT Center for Solar Energy Research. Nextracker has contributed a $6.5 million gift to support this initiative, which aims to advance solar power plant technology.
The new research center will drive a leading-edge research program and a planned state-of-the-art solar test field, with efforts prioritizing technologies to enhance power plant performance and operations. This collaboration is expected to pave the way for the rapid expansion of utility-scale solar.
The initiative also plans to integrate cutting-edge solar technologies into UC Berkeley’s engineering and environmental science programs, providing students with hands-on learning experiences. Alex Au, Nextracker's co-founder and CTO, will oversee CALNEXT operations, with Dr. Francesco Borrelli appointed as co-director.
