Opera Limited has rolled out Gemini‑powered AI across its three flagship browsers—Opera One, Opera GX, and Opera Neon—providing free access to more than 80 million users. The update introduces a side‑panel AI that can answer questions, summarize web pages, compare open tabs, and analyze files, including images and video, while giving users granular control over which browsing context is shared.
The new AI is built on Opera’s agentic‑based engine, a technology first introduced in Opera Neon that allows the browser to act on behalf of users. Opera claims the engine delivers 20 % faster responses than its previous model, and the side‑panel can be toggled on or off, giving users full privacy controls over data that is sent to Google’s Gemini models.
Strategically, the rollout reinforces Opera’s ambition to become an “operating system for AI services.” The company is offering advanced AI for free in its mainstream browsers while reserving premium, agentic AI capabilities for Opera Neon, a subscription‑based product. Opera’s management highlighted that the integration has already driven a 17 % annual increase in query revenue, indicating that the new features are not only enhancing user experience but also generating tangible revenue from AI‑driven user actions.
