Opera Limited today launched Opera One R3, its flagship browser, adding advanced tab management, AI, and productivity tools. The update introduces Tab Islands that automatically group related tabs, color‑coded and nameable, a split‑screen mode that supports up to four tabs in various layouts, and integration of Gmail and Calendar directly into the sidebar.

The new version rebuilds Opera AI on Gemini models, enabling the assistant to answer queries within a single tab or across an entire Tab Island. The AI can access local files and communicate with other apps, providing faster, context‑aware responses that help users complete tasks without leaving the browser.

In addition to AI, R3 expands the browser’s modular design. New themes and soundscapes sync with the user’s music player, and the split‑screen layout supports multiple configurations for multitasking. The integration of Google services has been available since 2020, but the new sidebar placement makes it more accessible for everyday use.

The launch is part of Opera’s broader pivot toward AI and fintech. The company’s MiniPay platform has surpassed 10 million activated wallets and processed over 200 million transactions, and the new browser features are expected to drive higher user engagement and open future monetization channels such as performance‑based advertising and subscription‑based premium AI services.

Senior Director of Product Mohamed Salah said, “The beginning of a new year can be overwhelming, but the time to get things done is now. We’re giving you the best browser to work with as many AI tools, websites and services, all within a beautiful visual and auditory experience.” His comments underscore the focus on productivity and user experience.

By adding AI‑powered productivity tools and deepening its fintech footprint, Opera is positioning itself against dominant browsers that rely on ad revenue and is moving toward a diversified technology model. The launch signals a strategic shift that could reshape the company’s revenue mix and competitive standing in the browser and fintech markets.
