Pony AI Inc. announced on January 15, 2025, that it has become the first company in China to receive approval for robotruck platooning tests on cross-provincial highways. This permit allows for operations connecting Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei Province, marking a significant step in the commercialization of autonomous trucking.
The approval enables Pony AI to operate robotrucks in a '1+N' platoon configuration, where only the lead truck requires a safety operator, with subsequent trucks operating autonomously. Initial platooning tests are set to commence on the Beijing-Tianjin-Tanggu Expressway, with the company aiming for full autonomy for all following trucks to further reduce logistics costs.
This milestone builds on Pony AI's existing cross-provincial freight service with Sinotrans Limited, where it has logged over 45,000 kilometers and completed nearly 500 standard shipping container units of freight orders. By the end of December 2024, Pony AI's robotrucks had traveled more than 5 million kilometers and transported over 860 million freight ton-kilometers, demonstrating its leadership in L4 autonomous truck logistics in North China.
