A federal grand jury indicted Phillips 66 on six counts for alleged violations of the Clean Water Act, stemming from illegal discharges of industrial wastewater from its Carson, California facility. The U.S. Department of Justice stated the company is accused of dumping hundreds of thousands of gallons of wastewater containing excessive oil and grease into the Los Angeles County sewer system.
The indictment specifies two incidents: on November 24, 2020, and February 8, 2021. In the first instance, the wastewater's oil and grease concentration exceeded permitted levels by 329 times, and in the second, by 172 times. Phillips 66 also allegedly failed to report these violations to authorities.
If convicted of all charges, Phillips 66 faces a maximum sentence of five years' probation on each count and up to $2.4 million in fines. The company stated it will cooperate with the U.S. Attorney's office and is prepared to present its case in court, reaffirming its commitment to safe operations and environmental protection.
