PayPal launched a contactless payment feature at payment terminals in Germany on May 6, 2025, making it the first country in Europe to offer this service. This move positions PayPal in direct competition with established mobile wallet providers like Apple Pay and Google Pay.
To use PayPal's 'Tap-to-Pay' feature, users need the latest version of the PayPal app on their iPhone or Android device, allowing them to pay anywhere Mastercard accepts contactless payments. This expansion was facilitated by a European Court of Justice ruling that mandated greater access to NFC technology on iPhones.
In addition to contactless payments, PayPal is also introducing 'Ratenzahlung To Go' (installment payment options) for in-store purchases in Germany, allowing customers to pay in three, six, 12, or 24 monthly installments. This comprehensive offering aims to drive adoption and increase PayPal's share of physical retail transactions.
