LexisNexis® Risk Solutions published new findings on July 15, 2025, regarding national and regional mental health provider density trends in the United States. The analysis, leveraging data from LexisNexis® Provider Data MasterFile™ and U.S. Census population data, revealed an overall increase but unequal distribution of mental health providers.
The total number of mental health providers in the U.S. increased by 11.4% between January 2020 and January 2024, with Montana seeing the highest increase at 209.6%. However, nine states experienced a decrease in provider numbers, leading to significant patient-to-provider ratio variations.
Adam Mariano, president and GM of healthcare, LexisNexis Risk Solutions, emphasized that frequent changes to prescriber data, with nearly a quarter of providers having updated license or contact information in Q1 2025, create friction for patients. Keeping this data current is vital for ensuring patients connect with appropriate care, especially in underserved areas.
