Rio Tinto has officially opened its newest iron ore mine, Western Range, in Australia, a $2 billion project developed with joint venture partner China Baowu Group. Western Australian Premier Roger Cook and Federal Resources Minister Madeleine King joined Yinhawangka Traditional Owners and senior representatives to mark the milestone. The mine is expected to have a capacity of up to 25 million tonnes per year.
The project involved the construction of a primary crusher and an 18km conveyor system, which connects to the existing Paraburdoo processing facility. This infrastructure integration ensures efficient processing and transport of the iron ore. The Western Range mine is a significant addition to Rio Tinto's Pilbara operations.
The opening of this new mine is a very bullish operational milestone, contributing substantial new production capacity to Rio Tinto's core iron ore business. It strengthens the company's position as a leading global iron ore producer and supports long-term supply to key markets. This investment underscores Rio Tinto's commitment to maintaining its iron ore franchise.
