Rio Tinto's East Intercourse Island (EII) facility at Dampier Port in Western Australia's Pilbara region has resumed operations after being impacted by Tropical Cyclone Sean. A railcar dumper at the EII port facility was flooded when the cyclone delivered record rain on January 20, 2025. Dumper operation resumed last week, and the first ship was loaded today.
Tropical Cyclone Sean caused significant rainfall, including 274mm in Karratha, leading to the temporary closure of the facility. Year to date, Dampier Port has been closed for 10 days, and Cape Lambert for 13 days due to weather events. The resumption of shipping is crucial for Rio Tinto's iron ore exports.
This operational milestone indicates a recovery from weather-related disruptions, allowing the company to normalize its iron ore shipments. The swift resumption of operations minimizes the long-term impact on production volumes. It demonstrates Rio Tinto's ability to manage and recover from adverse weather conditions affecting its key infrastructure.
