Pratt & Whitney, a business unit of RTX Corporation, opened its European Technology and Innovation Center (ETIC) in Houten, Netherlands, on November 13, 2025. The new facility is the company’s first dedicated R&D hub in Europe and is designed to accelerate the development of next‑generation propulsion systems.
The center’s research agenda centers on hybrid‑electric and hydrogen propulsion technologies, key components of RTX’s broader ESG strategy to help the aviation industry reach net‑zero emissions by 2050. By investing in these emerging powertrains, Pratt & Whitney aims to reduce fuel consumption and emissions for commercial aircraft while maintaining performance and reliability.
ETIC is built on a triple‑helix collaboration model that brings together industry, academia, and government. The facility partners with the Netherlands Aerospace Group and Delft University of Technology, creating a seamless environment for joint research, talent development, and technology transfer. Michael Thacker, Senior Vice President of Engineering and Technology, described the center as a “first‑of‑a‑kind facility for Pratt & Whitney in Europe” that will shorten time‑to‑market for new engine technologies.
Management emphasized the strategic importance of the center. Thacker highlighted the opportunity to tap the Netherlands’ engineering talent and history of innovation, while Tjerk Opmeer, Deputy Director‑General for Business and Innovation at the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs, praised the collaboration as a catalyst for accelerating sustainable aviation. Professor Henri Werij of TU Delft noted that the partnership would “strengthen our partnership” and provide “seamless access to our innovation ecosystem.”
The ETIC expands RTX’s global R&D network, complementing existing centers in North America and Poland. By positioning a high‑capability research hub in Europe, Pratt & Whitney strengthens its foothold in a growing market for sustainable aviation solutions and creates new commercial opportunities through joint development projects with European partners.
The opening signals RTX’s continued commitment to technological leadership and sustainable aviation. The center’s focus on hybrid‑electric and hydrogen propulsion aligns with industry trends toward decarbonization, while the collaborative ecosystem is expected to accelerate innovation, reduce development costs, and position Pratt & Whitney to capture emerging market share in next‑generation aircraft engines.
