Sunrun Inc. announced it is activating over 130,000 home batteries, representing more than two-thirds of its total battery fleet, to support America’s power grid this summer. The company's grid service programs now have the capability of dispatching 650 megawatts of peak power, which is enough to power 480,000 homes or a city the size of Austin, Texas, at critical times daily. Sunrun CEO Mary Powell highlighted that America is facing "insatiable, hockey-stick energy demand" driven by manufacturing, data centers, and artificial intelligence. She stated that Sunrun's focus on pairing storage with solar positions it to rapidly bring new generating capacity online to stabilize the grid and advance national energy independence. With nearly a gigawatt of total battery capacity installed, equivalent to a nuclear power plant’s worth of peak power, Sunrun is the largest distributed battery power plant provider and operator globally. The company's storage attachment rate surged to nearly 70% of new solar customers in the first quarter of this year, and it operates 17 dispatchable power plant programs across the country.
