Sunrun Inc. announced that its portfolio of virtual power plants (VPPs) successfully supported power grids across the country in 2024, reaching a combined instantaneous peak of nearly 80 megawatts. This capacity is greater than many traditional fossil-fuel power plants and was delivered by leveraging Sunrun’s fleet of residential solar and battery systems.
In 2024, over 20,000 Sunrun customers participated in 16 VPP programs across nine states and territories, supplying on-demand, stored solar energy during hundreds of critical energy events. Sunrun CEO Mary Powell noted that utilities are increasingly seeking Sunrun's help due to rapidly increasing electricity demand driven by artificial intelligence, domestic manufacturing, and electrification.
The company's 2024 VPP initiatives enhanced grid reliability, reduced emissions, and decreased costs for electricity customers, with peak season customer enrollment growing approximately 100% year-over-year. Sunrun President and Chief Revenue Officer Paul Dickson stated the company expects to monetize more battery assets and secure additional recurring revenue streams in 2025, building on its storage-first approach.
