On March 14, 2025, Canada officially reinstated imports from Smithfield Foods' Tar Heel, North Carolina facility, resolving a temporary suspension that began on March 6. The suspension was due to an issue with a limited number of certain offal shipments.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) confirmed that meat produced at the Tar Heel plant after March 12 is now eligible for export to Canada. Products manufactured between March 6 and March 12 remain banned from entry.
Smithfield Foods expressed gratitude to the USDA and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency for the swift resolution. The resumption of exports from this major processing plant is important for Smithfield's market access in Canada.
