Shenandoah Telecommunications Company (Shentel) has begun deploying its 100% fiber‑to‑the‑home (FTTH) network in Radford, Virginia, under the Glo Fiber brand. The rollout delivers symmetrical, multi‑gigabit internet speeds, phone, video, and whole‑home Wi‑Fi to both residential and business customers.
Construction of the new fiber lines is slated to finish by March 2026. Once the infrastructure is live, existing Shentel customers in the area can upgrade to the new service at no additional cost, with the upgrade process expected to be completed within a few weeks of construction completion in each neighborhood.
The announcement notes that 1,500 new passings will be added in Radford—referring to the homes and businesses that will receive fiber connectivity. This figure represents a targeted phase of the broader expansion, which aims to pass 600,000 homes nationwide by the end of 2026 and to grow the company’s fiber route miles beyond 18,000.
The launch is a key element of Shentel’s fiber‑first transformation, accelerated by the 2024 acquisition of Horizon Telcom for $385 million. The acquisition doubled the company’s commercial fiber business and expanded its Glo Fiber reach, positioning Shentel to capture a larger share of the high‑speed broadband market in the eastern United States.
By offering symmetrical multi‑gig speeds and integrated phone and video services, Shentel differentiates itself from competitors that still rely on legacy cable or DSL. The new service is expected to improve customer retention, attract new subscribers, and support the company’s goal of becoming a fiber‑dominant provider.
"Shentel is excited to build on its long and successful history of providing reliable broadband services in the City of Radford with the introduction of Shentel Fiber," said Chris Kyle, Vice President of Regulatory and Industry Affairs. Mayor David Horton added, "We are pleased with the investment Shentel is making in the City of Radford and the overall upgrade in broadband service reliability, availability, and speed.”
