SLB and Ormat Technologies have entered into a partnership to accelerate the development and commercialization of integrated enhanced geothermal systems (EGS). The collaboration will design and construct an EGS pilot at an Ormat site, with SLB providing subsurface expertise, digital platforms, and drilling technology, while Ormat contributes its leading geothermal and recovered‑energy generation capabilities.

The partnership includes a license for Ormat’s EGS patent, positioning SLB to deploy a “geothermal‑as‑a‑service” offering that de‑risks technical and economic barriers, improves system efficiency, and reduces drilling and completion costs. The joint effort aims to validate commercial‑scale EGS and optimize surface‑facility integration for long‑term sustainability.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, next‑generation geothermal could reach 90 GW of capacity by 2050, with the United States alone potentially adding up to 300 GW. By entering this market, SLB expands beyond oilfield services, diversifying its revenue base and targeting new growth opportunities for independent power producers, utilities, and data‑center operators.

SLB’s involvement in 80 % of the world’s geothermal projects and Ormat’s status as the largest manufacturer of geothermal binary equipment underscore the strength of this partnership. While specific financial terms and a firm commercialization timeline have not been disclosed, the alliance is expected to drive large‑scale EGS deployment in the coming years.
