NuScale Power Corporation announced on June 18, 2025, new research programs aimed at advancing an integrated energy system for clean water and energy-efficient hydrogen production. This initiative broadens the potential applications of its SMR technology.
The research indicates that a single NuScale Power Module (NPM) coupled with a reverse osmosis desalination system could yield approximately 150 million gallons of clean water per day. This capacity could provide desalinated water for a city of 2.3 million residents, with surplus power for 400,000 homes.
Furthermore, NuScale developed a novel approach for hydrogen production using leftover brine from desalination, in partnership with Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. This hydro-thermal chemical decomposition method avoids water electrolysis, reducing energy and water usage, and is carbon-free if powered by NuScale's integrated energy systems. This breakthrough addresses water scarcity, brine remediation, and clean hydrogen production, expanding NuScale's market opportunities.
