Italy’s Competition Authority Closes EV Disclosure Probe into Stellantis and Other Automakers After Commitments to Improve Consumer Information

On December 19 2025, Italy’s competition authority (AGCM) announced that it had closed its investigations into Stellantis, BYD, Tesla and Volkswagen after the companies agreed to improve the clarity of information provided to consumers about electric‑vehicle performance and battery conditions.

The probes, launched in February 2025, focused on whether automakers were giving buyers sufficient detail on driving range, battery capacity degradation and warranty limits. Stellantis, along with the other firms, committed to revising their websites to present clearer, real‑world range data, to add a simulation tool that lets buyers compare vehicles, and to extend warranty coverage against battery degradation. The commitments must be implemented within 120 days of the closure.

By agreeing to these measures, the companies avoided potential fines that could have ranged from €5,000 to €10 million. The closure removes a regulatory burden that could have weighed on Stellantis’s operations in Italy, a key European market, and signals compliance with consumer‑protection standards that are increasingly scrutinized across the continent.

Stellantis confirmed that it had fully cooperated with the AGCM and expressed confidence that it had provided “adequate, precise and exhaustive answers” to the officials. The company emphasized that customer needs and satisfaction remain central to its activities and that the investigation would reinforce its commitment to transparent communication.

The decision reflects a broader European trend of regulators tightening scrutiny over EV marketing claims. While the market reaction was most pronounced for Tesla, which saw a positive response after the announcement, Stellantis’s closure is expected to stabilize its regulatory profile and support its ongoing EV strategy in a rapidly evolving market.
