Stellantis Recalls Over 320,000 Jeep 4xe Plug‑In Hybrids Over Battery Fire Risk

Stellantis has issued a recall for 320,065 U.S. Jeep Wrangler 4xe vehicles from model years 2020‑2025 and 2022‑2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe vehicles, a total that brings the global recall to more than 375,000 vehicles. The defect stems from separator damage inside Samsung SDI‑supplied high‑voltage battery cells, which can cause a short circuit and ignite a fire. The issue has already led to 19 reported fires and at least one injury, underscoring the severity of the safety risk.

Owners of affected vehicles are advised to park outside, away from structures, and to refrain from charging the battery until the recall service is completed. Stellantis will send notification letters beginning December 2, 2025, with follow‑up correspondence once the remedy is available. The company has also issued a public advisory urging drivers to avoid charging the battery during the recall period.

This recall supersedes and expands upon NHTSA recall 24V‑720, which addressed the same battery issue but was found to be ineffective. The new recall, identified by NHTSA recall number 25V‑741, covers all vehicles that were part of the earlier remedy and adds additional model years that were not previously included.

The scale of the recall will strain Stellantis’ service network, increase repair and warranty costs, and could impact the company’s financial results for the year. The safety defect also threatens consumer confidence in the Jeep brand and exposes Stellantis to regulatory penalties and potential litigation, highlighting the importance of rigorous safety oversight as the company expands its electrified lineup.

The recall illustrates the challenges Stellantis faces in scaling its Jeep 4xe plug‑in hybrids. The company has invested heavily in U.S. production and electrification, and a safety issue of this magnitude could dampen demand and erode brand equity. Stellantis’ response will be closely watched as it seeks to maintain momentum in its EV strategy while addressing supplier‑related risks.

The incident occurs amid heightened regulatory scrutiny of battery safety across the industry, with several automakers reporting similar fire risks. Samsung SDI, the battery supplier, is under increased pressure to resolve design flaws, and the recall underscores the broader trend of battery‑related safety recalls in the electric‑vehicle market.
