STMicroelectronics introduced its new ST1VAFE3BX bio-sensing chip on October 28, 2024, designed for next-generation healthcare wearables such as smartwatches, sports bands, connected rings, and smart glasses. This highly integrated device combines a high-accuracy biopotential input with ST’s inertial sensing and an embedded AI core.

The chip's AI core performs activity detection directly on the chip, ensuring faster performance with lower power consumption, which is crucial for wearable applications. The ST1VAFE3BX is now in production and available from the eSTore and distributors, priced at $1.50 for orders of 1000 units.

Early adopters, including BM Innovations GmbH and Pison, have already integrated the new sensor into their product development, indicating its potential to enable advanced capabilities like heart-rate variability, cognitive function, and mental state monitoring in compact form factors.
