SolarBank Corporation announced on February 20, 2025, a partnership with Viridi, a leader in fail-safe battery energy storage systems (BESS), for the development of a combined 3.06 MW DC ground-mount solar power project and a 1.2 MWH BESS in Buffalo, New York. The project is being constructed on a closed landfill site, transforming previously unusable land into a productive clean energy asset.

Under the transaction structure, SolarBank intends to own the project, subject to financing, while Viridi will supply its innovative lithium-ion battery packs. Viridi's BESS technology features integrated fire suppression and anti-propagation technology, designed to meet stringent safety standards by isolating individual cells to prevent thermal runaway.

SolarBank has secured a lease for the project site and has applied for interconnection approval. Following successful interconnection approval, the company will proceed with permitting and securing the necessary financing for construction. Once completed, the project will operate as a community solar initiative with supporting BESS, providing reliable, high-performance energy storage.
