Thermo Fisher Scientific's PPD clinical research business has partnered with DHL Express to implement more sustainable clinical research services, aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from global air shipping. The collaboration involves using DHL Express' GoGreen Plus service and investing in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
This initiative is projected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% on necessary air shipments during clinical trials, including the transport of laboratory samples, kits, and other supplies. The move supports Thermo Fisher's commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 and its near-term climate targets, which are aligned with the Paris Agreement.
The use of SAF for air shipments is a critical step in mitigating the environmental impact of rapid clinical research logistics, where air transport is often the only viable option. This collaboration also enables the PPD clinical research business and its customers to reduce their Scope 3 emissions, which are indirect greenhouse gas emissions from the value chain.
