Telesat and MDA Space announced on December 4, 2024, the successful completion of the spacecraft Preliminary Design Review (PDR) for the Telesat Lightspeed low Earth orbit (LEO) constellation program. This PDR is a critical checkpoint that validates the maturity of the satellite design.

The successful completion of the PDR demonstrates that the design meets the program’s functional and performance requirements. PDRs for multiple key subsystems were also successfully concluded as part of this process.

With the PDRs completed, Telesat and MDA Space are now transitioning to the detailed engineering and manufacturing phase of the program, which includes the Critical Design Review. MDA Space, the prime satellite contractor for 198 Lightspeed satellites, is also constructing a new facility in Montreal to double its high-volume satellite manufacturing capacity, with first Lightspeed satellites scheduled for launch in 2026.
