An outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza has been confirmed in a commercial flock of 45,500 breeder chickens in Elbert County, Georgia, marking the state's first such case. This development is expected to trigger trade restrictions from major international meat importers, impacting U.S. chicken exports. The industry group, USA Poultry & Egg Export Council, estimates initial export losses could be around $34 million. Mexico, the largest importer of U.S. poultry, is likely to halt purchases from Georgia for two to four weeks, while Taiwan and South Korea are expected to impose longer bans of six to eight months and three to four months, respectively. For Tyson Foods, a significant poultry producer with operations in Georgia, this outbreak poses a direct threat to its export volumes and profitability in the Chicken segment. The trade restrictions will disrupt market access and could lead to an oversupply domestically, further pressuring prices and margins.
