United Airlines announced on September 29, 2025 that it has launched the International Remote Baggage Screening (IRBS) initiative, a new U.S. Customs and Borders Protection (CBP) process that eliminates the need for connecting passengers to re‑check bags on select international routes. The first implementation is on United’s daily service from Sydney, Australia (SYD) to San Francisco, California (SFO).
Since the launch, more than 160 passengers on each flight have used the new process, saving up to 45 minutes in their connection journey and reducing the risk of missed connections. The initiative streamlines the international arrival process by allowing checked bags to be transferred directly to the connecting flight, improving the overall customer experience for United’s long‑haul travelers.
United plans to expand the IRBS program to additional international routes in the coming months, partnering with CBP, Sydney Airport, BagCheck and Brock Solutions to enhance the bag inspection process. The rollout demonstrates United’s commitment to operational efficiency and customer convenience, positioning the airline to better serve its growing international network.
