UL Solutions announced the construction of a new electromagnetic and wireless testing laboratory on its existing campus in Neu‑Isenburg, Germany, approximately 12 km from Frankfurt. The facility will be capable of testing and certifying large, high‑power industrial equipment, appliances, medical devices, consumer products, and automotive components, filling a long‑standing regional gap in large‑scale EMC testing.
The laboratory is projected to be operational by mid‑2027 and represents a $200 million investment. It is being designed as a green building, incorporating renewable energy sources, advanced building controls, and rainwater harvesting systems to reduce its environmental footprint and align with UL’s sustainability commitments.
The new lab will offer a full suite of electromagnetic and wireless testing, including Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, mobile and cellular networks, GPS, and RFID, as well as high‑power industrial and automotive EMC tests. These capabilities will allow UL to provide faster, region‑specific certification services and reduce lead times for European customers, directly supporting the electrification and digitalization megatrends that drive demand for advanced testing and certification.
Strategically, the expansion strengthens UL’s presence in Europe’s industrial heartland and complements its existing network of EMC and wireless facilities in Asia, Mexico, the United Kingdom, and the United States. By localizing large‑scale testing, UL can better serve manufacturers who previously had to outsource services outside the region, thereby enhancing customer proximity and reinforcing its position as a leading safety‑science provider worldwide.
Morten Lassen, UL’s regional vice president for EMEA, said the investment “will fill a local gap for large‑scale EMC testing, which has forced some manufacturers to seek testing outside of the region. Expanding testing and certification services in Germany’s industrial heartland positions us to create a comprehensive testing site for our customers, meeting them where they are.” The comment underscores the company’s focus on meeting evolving regulatory requirements and the energy transition, enabling manufacturers to meet global standards with local testing resources.
