UL Solutions Inc. announced a new testing and certification service for immersion cooling fluids used in data centers. This service addresses the critical issue of dangerous overheating in data centers, which house essential equipment for artificial intelligence (AI) and other technologies.
Immersion cooling relies on specially designed liquids to efficiently dissipate heat from IT equipment, offering energy efficiency benefits over traditional air cooling. To achieve certification, these fluids must meet the requirements of UL 2417, the Outline of Investigation for Immersion Cooling Fluids, which includes tests for autoignition temperature, flash point, and dielectric breakdown voltage.
Data centers consumed approximately 4.4% of total U.S. electricity in 2023, projected to reach 6.7% to 12% by 2028, highlighting the urgent need for safe and energy-efficient cooling solutions. This new service is part of UL Solutions' broader efforts to advance safety in data centers, including its involvement with the Open Compute Project and programs for modular data centers.
