Optum Rx, a UnitedHealth Group company, has partnered with Surescripts to launch 'Optum Rx PreCheck Prior Authorization,' an innovative solution designed to automate the prior authorization process for select prescription drugs.
This new system aims to drastically reduce approval times from an average of 8.5 hours to under 30 seconds. A pilot program conducted with the Cleveland Clinic and another large health system demonstrated these significant reductions in wait times.
Currently, over 25 drugs, including GLP-1s for diabetes, can be automated through this PreCheck Prior Authorization system. This initiative is expected to alleviate administrative burdens for physicians and expedite patient access to necessary medications.
