On October 3, 2024, the Navajo Nation announced plans to enforce a tribal law restricting the transportation of uranium ore across its lands, directly impacting Energy Fuels Inc.'s operations. Tribal police intended to stop trucks hauling ore from the Pinyon Plain Mine in Arizona to the White Mesa Mill in Utah. The Navajo Nation's President and Attorney General asserted their right to block federal highways, despite a 2012 tribal law that generally opposes radioactive material transport but exempts state and federal routes. Energy Fuels stated it had begun hauling as planned, having notified federal, state, county, and tribal officials over ten days prior regarding legal requirements and safety protocols. Energy Fuels emphasized that its uranium ore shipments comply with all regulations, are driven by licensed operators, and are transported in tightly covered vehicles. The company highlighted its track record of safely transporting hundreds of thousands of tons of uranium ore across northern Arizona since the 1980s without incidents of spillage or release.
