Twelve warehouse workers employed by Hays at the Vale Long Harbour processing plant have officially joined the United Steelworkers (USW) union. The Newfoundland and Labrador Labour Relations Board confirmed the workers' vote to unionize.

These contract workers perform critical warehouse duties that support operations at the Long Harbour facility, which processes nickel from Voisey's Bay. Their unionization expands the USW's representation at the site, joining 280 USW members at Vale’s metal processing facilities and 1,100 Steelworkers at Vale’s mining operations in Voisey’s Bay.

For Vale, this development signifies an evolving labor landscape, particularly concerning subcontracted workers. The union will now begin preparations to negotiate a collective agreement with Hays, which could impact labor costs and ensure operational stability through formalized agreements.
