Processing plant technicians at Vale's Long Harbour facility have successfully voted to join the United Steelworkers (USW) union. The Newfoundland and Labrador Labour Board announced that these 280 workers, who are involved in refining nickel, cobalt, and copper, will now be part of USW Local 9508.
This unionization follows a 'neutrality agreement' that Vale had with USW Local 9508, which already represents 1,120 workers at Vale’s Voisey’s Bay operations. The agreement facilitated the workers' decision to join the union without employer opposition.
The integration of these workers into the USW family is expected to provide them with stronger collective bargaining power for wages and benefits. For Vale, this development signifies a formalized labor relationship that could influence future operational costs and ensure stability through collective agreements.
