VIAVI Solutions Inc. and Rohde & Schwarz announced on December 4, 2024, that SKY Perfect JSAT Corporation has selected their joint Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) testbed for its newly unveiled 'Universal NTN Innovation Lab.' SKY Perfect JSAT is a pioneer in satellite communications and the largest provider of multichannel pay TV broadcast services in Japan, also operating the largest satellite communications business in Asia.
The NTN Lab, launched in November 2024 at the Yokohama Satellite Control Center, is equipped for technical NTN testing to 3GPP 5G NTN standards. It will serve as a testing hub for the realization of 'Universal NTN,' a concept aiming to deliver robust and reliable connectivity anywhere, anytime by leveraging Geosynchronous Earth Orbit (GEO) and non-GEO satellites, and High-Altitude Platform Stations (HAPS) with automatic routing technology.
The joint NTN testbed from VIAVI and Rohde & Schwarz covers Low Earth Orbit (LEO), Medium Earth Orbit (MEO), and GEO satellites. Initial testing at the lab will focus on GEO satellites operating in the Ku-band to enable high-capacity, wide-bandwidth communications. This collaboration is expected to accelerate technology demonstration and use case development, paving the way for significant progress in commercializing the NTN business.
