VIAVI Solutions Inc. announced on April 3, 2025, that it has expanded its VIAVI Automated Lab-as-a-Service for Open RAN (VALOR) testing facility. The expansion includes a new RF-shielded anechoic chamber and two additional customer labs, located in Chandler, Arizona. The VALOR Lab, funded by the U.S. National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) Public Wireless Supply Chain Innovation Fund, offers a highly automated, open, and impartial suite for Open RAN interoperability, performance, and security.
The new RF Chamber represents the industry's first Test-as-a-Service offering for Massive MIMO and beamforming over-the-air (OTA) validation, including system-level Massive MIMO performance testing for up to 16 parallel spatial layers. Massive MIMO, an evolution of MIMO technology, utilizes large antenna arrays to support the increased data rates and spectral efficiency of 5G. OTA testing streamlines the process by emulating real-world scenarios with wireless signals in a shielded chamber.
Erik Probstfield, Senior Director, VALOR, VIAVI, stated that this expansion addresses the growing demand for the innovative Open RAN Lab-as-a-Service offering, which democratizes Open RAN testing for technology vendors. The new RF Chamber is expected to accelerate O-RU commercialization and innovation. VALOR is also the first AI-RAN Alliance-endorsed lab and provides services to customers referred by AT&T and Verizon's ACCoRD project, further solidifying its industry position.
