Viking Holdings Ltd announced on December 3, 2024, the delivery of its newest ocean ship, the Viking Vela, from Fincantieri's shipyard in Ancona, Italy. This 998-guest vessel, with 499 staterooms, is classified as a small ship and will embark on its inaugural season sailing itineraries in the Mediterranean and Northern Europe.
The naming ceremony for the Viking Vela took place on December 9, 2024, in Trieste, Italy, celebrating Viking's long-standing partnership with Fincantieri. Ivana Elice, Vice President and Project Manager of Fincantieri's Cruise Business Unit, served as the ceremonial godmother.
The Viking Vela has been designed with future sustainability in mind, being 'hydrogen-ready' for retrofitting to incorporate a partial hybrid propulsion system based on liquid hydrogen and fuel cells. This prepares the ship for potential zero-emission operations in environmentally sensitive areas, aligning with evolving industry standards and environmental concerns.
