Coherent Corp. announced it is evaluating strategic alternatives for its Streamlined Hydrometallurgical Advanced Recycling Process (SHARP™) technology, which efficiently recovers and recycles critical metals from lithium-ion batteries (LiBs). This decision stems from an ongoing strategic portfolio assessment.
SHARP™ technology addresses the increasing global demand for LiB recycling by enabling the production of cathode precursors and materials suitable for new LiB production directly from LiB waste. Unlike traditional processes, SHARP eliminates the need for extensive critical metal separation and purification steps.
The company stated that SHARP has been successfully scaled up, with products performing on par with pristine materials in battery applications. Coherent does not anticipate making further public comments until a material development occurs, indicating a focused approach to its core businesses.
